Music
A musical school is a successful school – music has an impact on attainment through the whole curriculum developing resilience, confidence and communication. At Horsforth Featherbank, our Music curriculum is delivered through ArtForms. All ArtForms National Curriculum staff are fully qualified specialist teachers who offer ultimate flexibility in being able to enhance Horsforth Featherbank's work.
In class all our children are given the opportunity to play together in ensembles and on their own as soloists. They enjoy performing to their families in class assemblies, concerts and at Christmas. Our children have the opportunity to perform in assemblies and accompany the KS2 Carol Concert. We also participate in the Horsforth PROMS an annual music collaboration.
EYFS
Using well-established music schemes of work and methods, ArtForms teach our Reception class to improve outcomes in:
- phonological and phonemic awareness and retention;
- social cohesion, emotional awareness and inclusion;
- vocal confidence;
- listening skills and improved attention.
KS1 and KS2
High quality outcomes are achieved through practical music making sessions. Music curriculum lessons are filled with singing and the playing of instruments which empower children and increase their skills, confidence and resilience.
Children’s musical progress is monitored via the ArtForms Progression and Assessment document. Age-appropriate musical instruments and learning resources are supplied.
Rock Steady
Rocksteady is the UK’s leading rock school and we’re proud that their fun, inclusive band lessons now take place at our school. As well as teaching new musical skills through contemporary rock and pop music, Rocksteady have a proven significant, positive impact on wellbeing, confidence, and life skills for primary aged children. Recently they were awarded ‘Schools Wellbeing Resource of the Year’ at the Education Today awards, for their work inspiring children through music. Lessons are open for children from Year 1 to Year 6 and they can choose to play either vocals, electric guitar, drums, bass, or keyboards in their very own band. All instruments are provided, and no musical experience is necessary. Children progress through a 300 skill curriculum learning band, performance and instrument skills and work towards an examfree Ofqual regulated music qualification accredited by Trinity College London. You can follow your child’s progress through your own online parent timeline as well as seeing how far your child has come at their termly concert.
You can set up your parent account with Rock Steady to access your child's progress in their weekly sessions, as well as keep up-to-date with dates for termly concerts.
Singing Assemblies
Every Thursday afternoon we have a whole-school singing assembly! For the Autumn term, Mrs Sowden (our music curriculum leader) is covering songs from the 90s. Here are the songs we've been learning for you to listen along to at home
